Look beyond the room photograph

Ask for the exact hostel or residence, its location and the expected room-sharing arrangement. A photograph of one room may not describe the room allocated to you. Understand what is included in the charge, how allocation works and whom to contact if there is a maintenance problem.

The questions worth asking

• How many students share the room, bathroom and kitchen?
• What furniture, bedding and storage are provided?
• What are the heating, laundry and internet arrangements?
• How long is the journey to teaching buildings and clinical sites?
• What are the visitor, quiet-hours and holiday rules?
• What are the deposit, payment and room-change policies?

Food and a workable routine

Confirm whether you will cook, use a university canteen or have access to an independently operated food service. Ask about kitchen access and storage. If you have dietary needs, discuss the actual options at your residence rather than assuming that every city offers the same arrangements.

Start with a small weekly shopping plan. A familiar meal, a regular study time and a manageable commute can make a new place feel easier to navigate. Learn the location of nearby shops, the university office and the route home before the busiest teaching weeks begin.

Living with other students

Agree expectations about cleaning, visitors, noise and shared purchases early. Keep valuables and important documents secure. If there is a problem, use the residence’s reporting process and keep a record of your request. Communicating clearly is usually more useful than allowing small frustrations to accumulate.

Private accommodation

If you are considering a private rental, ask the university how it affects any required residence formalities.
