A family budget that includes real life
Look beyond tuition to accommodation, food, travel, insurance where required, documents and a contingency. Ask which figures are confirmed and which are estimates. Record the currency used in the contract and plan for exchange-rate movements.
Discuss how funds will be transferred and what happens if the usual route is unavailable. A practical contingency gives the student more confidence and reduces the pressure of solving a payment problem at a distance.
Support and independence
Agree a regular way to stay in touch, particularly around arrival and the first few weeks. Encourage your child to learn how to use the university’s offices and processes. Knowing whom to ask is part of becoming comfortable in a new place.
Different concerns need different contacts. Academic questions belong with the relevant department; residence issues may need hostel administration; urgent situations require local emergency services. Keep the contact plan clear and accessible.
